Joining the chorus of trade unions on the need for unions in IT and BPO
sectors, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday said it
will educate the workers in the sector to organise themselves.
"We will explain it to them (the workers in IT and BPO sectors) that it
is good for them to form unions," CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash
Karat said in an interactive session with Forum of Financial Writers.
Trade unions, especially CPI (M)-backed Centre for Indian Trade Unions
and CPI-affiliated All India Trade Union Congress, have favoured unions
in BPO and IT sectors alleging violation of labour laws by them.
The CPI (M)-led government in West Bengal has accorded the status of
public utility to BPO operations.
"Public utility can also have trade unions though they cannot disrupt
operations as a form of protest," Karat said.
He said there are no unions in IT and BPO sectors but if workers want
to unite they have a right to do so under the Constitution. "No one can
impose unions on them from outside," Karat added.
He said the party would have proper discussions on the issue of unions
in IT and BPO sectors and come up with a clarity on this.
