I doubt whether the cricket market in the States made up largely of
relatively recent immigrants would be worthwhile for ESPN to pursue. It
would not make up for whatever they would have to drop instead.
As for the market in Canada (which really means Ontario and B.C, forget it).
ESPN is not a public service. Not even one-day matches are going to be
shown. Canada has 30 million - a relatively small number of whom are
interested in cricket, compared with the 300 million market. Canada has even
shown how little they miss the hockey season.
What needs to be done in Canada particularly is to promote cricket among
Canadian-born young people, generally the children of immigrants. That means
getting it into the schools particularly in Toronto and Vancouver, if
possible. In that way one can guarantee future tv audiences for cricket. The
future of cricket in North America passes through Canada.
