For some reason when reading this topic my mind evokes this lyric from
the Beatles:
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Yeah, There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
(instrumental break)
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, yeah let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me.
Shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
There will be no sorrow
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, yeah let it be.
There will be and answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, yeah let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
It seems to me that the chicken is a mystical animal to Hmong, hence
it was and still used as "The one who shows the way" or "qaib qhuabke"
to the soul in the Hmong funeral practice. If one plainly look it as a
chicken then it could be the object of ridicule. In the cultural
context, if one consider it as the majestic and mystical animal then
one may start to understand this pracice. And yes Yaweh, your remarks
did explain the importance of the chicken in Hmong belief system.
Now if you replace the word "mother marry" by mystic chicken or mystic
bird in the above lyric then you would obtain something hopeful like
this:
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mystic bird please comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
You are standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Mystic bird please comes to me
There will be no sorrow
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, yeah let it be.
There will be and answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be.
Let it be, yeah let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
Of course now you can replace any meaningful symbol to your belief,
and voila in the darkest time of your life you'll have something to
hold on. Miracles and random acts of supernatural phenomena are non
repetitive events and as odd as they can be, all people, illiterate or
educate, will continue to worship them as they come to experience and
benefit directly from them.
Before ending this post I'd like to share a real story:
Long time ago in France there was a Hmong funeral for a respectable
Hmong gentleman.
A deserving Hmong funeral practice was carried out for him. On the
departing day to the cimetery that is located about 200 KM.
By custom a handful of "burning money" was included into the gasket.
Unfortunately the "burning money" were exhibit some micro flame but
unseen to the naked eye. During the journey the tiny flame continued
to burn and inflicted smoke inside the gasket and leaked to the
outside. When the smoke started to exhaust from the car, the escorts
rushed ahead the hearse and prompted it to stop to resolve the
problem. Quickly the situation was brought under control and the
funeral service went fine.
When every thing was done, the driver who was French man approached an
elder and asked him: Did you have a rooster in the hearse? Obviously
there was no live rooster in the hearse but the "Qai Qhuab kev". He
reported that prior to the incident he kept hearing the crowing of a
rooster from the car. It seems like event like this one would
perpetually extend belief and cultural practice. Sibtham
