vimhlub,
there is 'entertainment' value, but i don't agree with you that the
viewer 'thinks' these malicious and domestic violence acts are
entertaining outside of a movie. i think you need to relax and put
things in proper context. what's the difference between these hmong
movies and any other western/eastern movies with the same elements?
you talk about how nom phaj gave his wife a beat down, yes, that is
true and did happen in a scene in a movie. but, in the same movie, in
a different scene, did you not see the consequence of nom phaj lub
siab phem? koj tsis pom nom phaj cry like a txiv dev 'maiv puv os maiv
puv es....' what about the 'moral of the story' in these movies? you
know, in all these hmong movies with such scenes, at the end, all of
the characters perpetrating the violence and evil are met in kind with
kev ncaj ncees los sav.
my father hates us watching nom phaj and dr tom because my father is
nom phaj + dr tom put together; he always wants another wife; he
always use his fists and legs as resolutions to disputes; everyone
else is dumber than he is; he can't stop macking on young girls
(younger than my age; peb niam 4 is 18, kuv ces txwb yuav luag 30
xyoo).
it's not that these movies are creating problems, but they are more a
reflection of the problems and vices that already do exist in hmong
society, in particular hmong american society (although the settings
may take place in thailand/laos).
i say, get all the skeletons out of the closet and let artistic
expression paint the picture as vividly as can be. these scenes are
not without merit themselves, and although you may disagree with their
mockery and satire, at least they dare to penetrate inward to initiate
and engage dialouges concerning the hmong life. how many Ph.D., MD or
JD hmong scholars/professionals do you envision having the artistic
freedom to bring the vices and pains of the hmong life under the light
of scrutiny?

Lately, I am stupified by the support Hmong people give to stupid
Hmong movies made by stupid Hmong producers and actors/actresses.
Nowadays, Hmong movies continually put down Hmong customs, beliefs,
practices, and culture, yet Hmong continues to partake in and pay for
those put downs. Examples: Nom Phaj continues to beat and abuse women
in his movies, yet people think that's entertaining. Dr. Tom
continues to molest young Hmong girls movie after movies, yet Hmong
continues to give him money to produce more of the same disgusting
violations; others (too many to name) poked fun at Hmong "ua neeb",
"hu plig", and other beliefs/practices, yet Hmong continues to consume
those junks more than they eat rice.
Are Hmong too stupid to understand that they are paying for the
destruction of their own culture and beliefs? You would never see
such support in other cultures. Examples: try making mockeries of the
Buddha, Jesus, or Mohammed and see what you get from the Buddhists,
Christians, or Muslims.
Stop being stupid. Stop supporting stupidity. Stop supporting Nom
Phaj, Xab, Dr. Tom, etc. Stop supporting Hmong movies...until they
wise up.

I am somehow trapping in the midle.
As I alluded in the past that Hmong can tell a story best by using
words.
However the medium such as "moving pictures" is relatively new to
Hmong.
It is still a learning process. I know some young Hmong people who
could
become very capable directors. The biggest problems are time, carrer,
schedule,
family obligation and acquisition of acceptable equipments.
These are not impossible tasks but one but have the passion and
dedication and
above all financial support. If one focus to deliver specific content
for the Hmong
then it is a suicide mission. On the other hand something must be done
and those who invest the minimum can only aim at the Hmong pop and
Mom.
This is why the quality is so poor. Those Hmong who have vision just
withdraw
themselve from making a movie just for the sake of making a movie.
There are good news, the technology advancement keep getting better
and
become more affordable. I have no doubt that we will see more artistic
movie from
the next generation of a dirctor/producer. If properly managed a small
studio
could be sustainable even for a limited market. Sibtham
