Divorce, custody battle lead to murder-suicide

An 11-month-old boy is expected to recover after he was shot in the
leg Monday when his parents' bitter divorce and child custody battle
erupted into an apparent murder-suicide near Wellford.

Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies believe the boy's father, Xao
Steven Vang, 39, fired a gun once while his estranged wife, Chamaiporm
"Muey" Chongpatana, 27, held the baby in her arms. The bullet passed
though the child's leg and through his mother's hand.

Officers later found Vang and Chongpatana inside the house where the
dispute took place, 2134 John Dodd Road. Vang appeared to have
suffered stab wounds and died at the scene, said Spartanburg County
chief coroner's investigator Robin Forrest. His wife, who had also
been stabbed 15 times in the chest and arms, later died at Spartanburg
Regional Medical Center, Forrest said.

Investigators said Vang was the aggressor and apparently took his own
life after stabbing his wife. By the time deputies rushed into the
home, Vang was already dead, said Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck
Wright.

Baby shot first

Officers responded to the dispute at about 11:30 a.m., too late to
stop the killings, Wright said. Outside, two of Vang's nephews were
holding the bloodied child, Adam Vang, whose parents lay inside the
kitchen and living room areas.

Vang, who lived at 635 Wooden Bridge Road in Chesnee, had custody of
Adam over the weekend and was returning the boy to his mother.
Chongpatana, who was living at the John Dodd Road residence with
either friends or relatives, had a restraining order active against
Vang, Forrest said.

"They were supposed to meet to exchange custody of the child together
at the church, and he called and said, 'I'm coming to the house,' "
Forrest said. And she said, 'No, no, no,' and he said, 'Well, I am
anyway.' "

Vang, whom family described as a nice, calm man who didn't display
violent tendencies, had called two nephews shortly before the killings
and told him of his plans, said nephew Tao Vang, 22.

"He said if she didn't want to cooperate with him, he was going to
take both of their lives, them two," he said.

His clothes and hands covered in blood Monday, Tao Vang described
arriving at the house shortly after his uncle and seeing him take Adam
to the front porch, where an argument ensued, then a gunshot. Xao Vang
and Chongpatana moved inside the home, and Tao Vang said he ran to
grab the baby from the porch.

"I just saw blood all over him and on the porch, and I didn't know he
was shot until I got up off the porch, and my cousin said he was
shot," he said. "I don't know - in my mind I just had to get the kid
safe."

Another of Xao Vang's nephews, Titus Yang, 19, said his uncle was a
happy man who made his living as a truck driver and wasn't known to
carry weapons. The couple had fought over the child in the past, he
said, but violence wasn't a factor.

"It was nothing like you see today," Yang said. "There was no
violence, and I guess he just held it back until today."

Other family members huddled in front of the yellow police tape by the
house Monday, sharing the news and comforting one another.

Ugly divorce

According to court papers, Xao Vang married Chongpatana in April 2005
after she moved from Thailand to live with him. Adam was their only
child together, but Chongpatana brought one of her two sons from
Thailand, James, to live with the family in the United States. The
couple separated in March of this year when she filed for divorce, and
both sought custody of Adam.

Their divorce proceedings grew increasingly harsh. Xao Vang said his
wife left him after her visa expired and her petition to stay in the
United States was denied in March. He accused her of threatening to
kill his family, abusing her son James and marrying another man in a
religious ceremony shortly after the separation in hopes of staying in
the country.

Chongpatana, meanwhile, claimed her husband physically abused her and
James and treated her like a servant. He also was involved
romantically with another woman at the time he married her and had a
child with that woman shortly thereafter, she said.

After Monday's events, Wright urged people to pray for the couple's
orphaned child.

"Most domestics you go out to are a result of a fight," Wright said.
"Not this one. This went to the max here. I don't understand why
people get so emotional about what's mine and what's yours and get to
the point where they have to kill someone over it."
