Hmong, in ancient China, as told by a well published Hmong Hunan
(hu=lake, nan=south; south lake province) scholar, also had long
identifiable family names as well; it was carved on a totem pole/stick
that one would carry. The name carved are like how we "laig dab"; it
has one's grand father, father, and other identifable things such as a
birth place etc.
Li ntawv peb Hmoob thiaj paub sib hu txum phaj; yog koj tus pa thiab
lub npe ntev dua ces koj yog phaj me.
But when imperial system assimilated the Hmong, the four Chinese tones
could not write the long Hmong name so our current family names of Vang
(office worker), Yang (military) , Thoj (farmer) etc. were given to
coincide with our assigned responsibilities.
As for the weird adaptation you've mentioned? It is survival skills
Hmong long adopted....nothing more nothing less....
