Thailand to let Hmong children visit families

Thailand has announced that 26 Hmong children expelled from a refugee
camp on the Lao border will be allowed to return temporarily.

A foreign ministry spokesman in Bangkok, Sihasak Puangketkeow, says the
reunion with their families is being organised on humanitarian grounds,
and will take place as soon as possible.

However, the spokesman says the Hmong entered Thailand illegally and
will eventually be sent back.

Laos has faced strong criticism from the United States over its alleged
obstruction of access to the children.

The Lao government says it has yet to locate the group, which was
secretly ejected for unknown reasons in early December.

The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, says it hopes the children
will be reunited with their parents within a week or two.
