Are you a teacher? Do you, can you, teach speech therapy? Or PE?
Or chemistry? Or Government? Or, one of your concerns: "Special
Education" for "language minority students"?
Of course a school district, big or small, can lack and DO lack many,
many qualified students ---- when it comes to specific focuses.
THAT, however, does NOT mean I do not part company with you
where many of these special needs classes are concerned; 'tis
especially true where ELL/ESL classes are conerned,,, ESPECIALLY
if the students are being taught by "para-professionals" who have
some minimally qualified BA/BS degrees in the various sort but
can't find a job in their field and so have decided to take the grant
to go to night school to become "culturally sensitive/knowledgeable"
ESL/ELL teachers at the local elementary school.
Please, do yourself a favor --- I am not putting you down, making
some kind of a commandment, or anything; just an honest
observation here --- and VISIT your St. Paul/Minneapolis public
schools ((( esp. small charter school))) where there are either
a lot of Hmong students or mainly, in two or three schools, Hmong
American students. AND THEN visit St. Paul Academy (private),
Breck (private), Blake (private), etc.
I'm sure your principal would give you a few days ----- if you're a
new teacher ----- to go and observe different schools and teachers
and teaching methods (for professional/educational development).
And, please, observe BOTH students AND teachers.
I shed tears for you, with you, by you,,,, when I look at most of the
public schools (charter and traditional) Hmong American students
attend. Taht's because I know how lacking in SO MANY WAYS
they are,,,, from the simple lack of resources to student and teacher
dynamics/issues.
Again, you need to really go around and look at different schools,
both private and public, so you have a better perspective on
elementary and secondary education,,,, so that you will see why
about 90 percent of more of the PUBLIC school teachers you have
are Whites, and why a disproportionate chunk of them are either
from private school or good suburb public schools.
I don't mean to sound arrogant, stupid, condescending, idiotic, or
any thing. I am merely sharing with you what I've seen: I've taught
in 3 different states, elementary through 12 grades, BOTH public
and private schools. Believe me when I say my perspective on
education is a tad broader than yours, if I may arrogantly say so
myself,,,
