Jones Leaving UH

I don't follow the UHM football schedule, so I asked my
son, who's a sports nut, about what the issue is on the
Hermann Frazier thing that's consuming so much space in
the newspapers. People seem to be going nuts over it
seemed to me to be trivial issues. And it would only be
natural that an offer would come along that Jones could
not refuse. From talking to my son it seems that the
practice field artificial turf is unsafe, but it could
still be patched in spots that they actually need to
practice on while a solution is found with the company
the UH bought it from.

There is another field that can be used but it becomes
unusable in the rain so the team trains at St. Louis
High School when it rains. Replacing the whole
artificial turf is probably up to the UH Board of
Regents to fund even if Frazier has talked to them. I
can't see why he is forced to get the department out of
a hole financially. It would seem that the BOR has the
wrong priority here-- not Frazier. And the current UHM
President should be seeking the repair funds from
private sports donors and legislature. There's lots of
blame to go arround and Frazier seems to be the
scapegoat.

Then there is the complaint about the firing of the
basket ball coach. Actually from what I hear of the
elaborate and complex settlement, it's only natural
that Riley be given a lot of consideration for all his
years of service to the UH team. And Bob Nash advocates
shouild not have to worry about the recruiting
headaches that happen during the change-over. It's what
Nash can do with the team that he has that counts, not
what he can not do with the team that UH supporters
would wish for. Like the Jones case, there a lot of
monday morning quarter-backing and grumbling that's
going on. That kind of energy and concern is more
suited for real problems like our economy, etc.

Anyway it was a nice holiday yesterday for the Martin
Luther King, Jr parade in Waikiki. Weather was perfect
except for some drizzle.
