What happened to this newsgroup? Way back when this newsgroup first
formed, it was a lot more busy. I take it that people have either lost
interest in Hawaii, or found another place(s) to discuss.
It's the Babylonian thing I've been worried about since websites
started hosting forums and people learned how to create new ones at
the alt. level on usenet. Alas. More people meeting in more places,
but in smaller groups. There must be some number of writers to make a
group interesting, and I'm afraid that ACH has seen much more
interesting days.
Where has everybody gone? Maybe people should be made aware that there
is another place to discuss Hawaii? Is this newsgroup "just another
place", or is there something special about it? I'd like to think
there is.
Interesting, as the same topic was posted to ChowHound's "Elsewhere in
America" board late last month. Now, that Web board does concentrate on
dining
in Hawai`i, as well as other areas of the US, that are not covered
elsewher.
In its historical makeup, Hawai`i was about 70% of all of the posts.
It seems that those IN Hawai`i, are just not interested, and that fewer
Mainlanders are interested, as well. This does not take into account the
possible tourists from other parts of the globe. I do not know how trips to
Hawai`i are playing in India, or Japan, or China. However, it does seem
that
the Mainland tourists have finally taken the hint, that they are not sought
after, and are spending their time and & elsehwere.
As far as this NG is concerned, I'm sure that a lot of attention HAS been
diverted to other forms of communication and information.
This is, in no way, meant to diminish the importance of many other topics,
that affect Hawai`i, Da Supa'Ferry, Duane Chapman, gasoline prices, housing
prices, etc., but to point out that, with a greater diversity of
conversation,
other outlets have enticed the usual participants away.
With an upcoming trip, I still lurk here, in hopes of uncovering something
that will prove useful, like Auntie Maria's posts on any musical event,
that
might coincide with my visit. Still, much is left untouched. In the alt
version of this NG, I see little more than bickering, so it is not worth my
time.
There is much to be discussed here, even for a haole-mainlander. Usually,
there are a dozen questions regarding lodging, dining and other aspects,
related to impending trips. I do not see those. My guess is that they
are now
on some travel Web forum, or that the tourists are just not interested in
"Paradise." I, for one, still am. Since coming to the Islands over 20 years
ago, we've managed to get back nearly each year, and sometimes twice/year,
visiting nearly all islands (open to haoles), and every side of each
island.
We've loved every moment, and always return. Others might not feel the same
way, or may seek info elsewhere.
Some time back, I posted for lu`au recs. for tourists, and got no
responses.
This was done, because so many used to ask for these recs., primarily on
Chowhound, and I had but a tiny impression. My hope was to steer them to
good
events, that were more traditional, than to the normal tourist events.
No one
had any comment. That has left me with no info to pass on. All I can say is
that the worthwhile ones, have been special events, and that the commercial
ones are kitsch and to be avoided. This is only based on my
observations, but
no locals, or experts, bothered to help with this issue. Lately, no one has
even requested this info, so I guess that the time has now passed.
and it's usually, "what's cheap to eat near our hotel/condo?"From a dozen Hawai`i dining requests per month, we now have an average of one,
I also noticed that none of my airlines, or hotels has had any specials, or
incentives for travel to Hawai`i lately. I'm afraid that, except for
die-hard
fans of Hawai`i, it's time might have passed. While I do not enjoy being
pressed, shoulder-to-shoulder with tourists, I find this sad. Without an
active tourist economy, I feel that "paradise," as we knew it, might soon
fade.
In finishing, I'd urge the subscribers to help promote their state, their
land, their heritage, as a "state of mind," worth experiencing. Or,
maybe not,
and let the tourists head to some Disneyesque version, and feel that
they have
captured, and experienced, the magic of Hawai`i. I can attest that they
have
not, and have missed so very much.
Sorry for the rant, but I feel, very sadly, that a part of the "aloha
spirit"
might be in an ICU someplace, and that makes me very sad.
