I really would like to know where all these crazy notions come from.
It looks like most people got it from this article:

I haven't been following that whole "side" of the story all along, so
I have no idea on whether the things expressed in that article reflect
current views 2 years later.
I read the article you referenced and I see how this kind of thing can
get a life of its own. The basic gist is that they put a former
Secretary of the Navy on the board with talk about using the ferry to
move military vehicles between Oahu and Hawaii on a daily basis. The
point being that using the current barge service to move vehicles
requires a six-month lead time whereas the ferry will save the
government both time and money. I'm all for the government saving
money since it happens to be my money, or at least some of it is, that
they'll be saving. We're not talking about serious troop movements
here, though. I pointed out in a recent post that this was the kind
of expedient usage that I felt was both expected and reasonable. The
military will use the ferry, just like everyone else, to get from here
to there. The barge system has worked for a long time, but the ferry
will bring a new, better level of service and convenience. It will
allow flexibility in planning trips to other islands that has been
impossible previously. I don't think the airlines and rental car
companies will be destroyed by the ferry. People will still rent
cars. People will still fly. The companies just won't have the
hammerlock on the people that they have now. People will have a
choice. That's what it's all about. That's how our system works:
competition and choice. The consumer is the clear winner. Long live
capitalism and the market economy!
