No landslides washing the road into the Pacific Ocean at Haleakala.
(yet) Less traffic.

I've driven the California coast line.

How is the driving uphill/downhill, winding, no guard rail at

compare to
driving thru the California coast line between San Simeon - Big
Sur -
Monterey...[ curvy, winding,

Which one is more treacherous? Haleakala vs California coast
route 1 ?

Much less traffic on road to/from Haleakala, than Rt 1, but there are
similarities. Views are different, but think of the first time that
you drove
Rt 1 - lotta' rubbernecking going on naturally. Same for your drive to
Haleakala. Also, on Haleakala you will not have to navigate around
Airstream
trailers and RVs, but keep a lookout for the bicycle tours. Some of
those folk
do not steer very well, and might well be in your lane on a curve.

Actually, I'd compare the road more closely to the route from
Temecula to La
Quinta - lotta' switchbacks and many of them are blind. Not as twisty
as the
road to Hana though, and probably less traffic.
