Re: Other unintentional consequences...

A number of thoughts. What is fundamentally wrong with hiring someone who
is a resident of the state? Why can't they promote someone to be the next
Chief from within the organization? Couldn't a good argument be made that
there are qualified candidates among all the police departments on the
islands....what about selecting someone who works for the Honolulu Police
Department?

In today's Star-Bulletin editorial...

Haven't heard about Kauai politics for quite a while
now. But this latest editorial is disturbing that for a
high office such as police chief, that it can be
limited to a resident of the state. There have been a
lot of police chiefs on Kauai in the past years. They
can't all have been bad.

Perhaps Kauai needs to look at how they select their
county council and police commision. It seems that
there are too many special interests and hidden agendas
and favors involved in in these elected and appointive
positions. Had talked to a past candidate for mayor,
Jimmy Tehada, who passed away many years ago, and heard
of the many political difficulties from him. Perhaps as
an engineer involved with the county planning on Kauai,
he would have been an excellent mayor, but the politics
was not the right mix to get elected.
