neighborhood....why...because they could not charge as much for their
products then they did before the big box companies moved in....price

Many small mom and pop places should have gone out of business years
before.
My brother knew a man that had a clothing store in Little Rock,
Arkansas.
He told my brother that he would add 25% to the suggested retail price
of
clothes. He said that, when he ran a sale, his sale price was the
original
suggested retail price. I knew someone that worked in the office of
W.T.
Grant stores in the 1970s (for all you younger people, it was a very
large
chain department store on the mainland). They would mark up clothes 20%
above the suggested retail price.
One thing that I know used to happen at a large chain and, if things
have
not changed, still does. The chain demands that suppliers give it
volume
discounts and tell the suppliers that they can't give those same volume
discounts to other stores. The practice of volume discounts is not
illegal; however, the supplier must, by law, make those same discounts
available to other stores.
