{EXCERPT} Kathimerini, Greece - Young Greek men will soon perform their military
service only in the army and not the air force or navy, according to plans
unveiled by Defense Minister...

The only amount of time you need to spend doing national service is about 6 weeks or less doing basic training. Once you can use a gun that is all the training you need and it will enable you to be called up at and time during a war. This is nothing more than 12 months slave labour instead of paying proper wages so that people can join the armed forces as a proper career on a permanent basis, which in the long run will cost less since you are not having to accommodate conscripts for 12 months who then leave and then you have to start all over again training new conscripts. The 6 weeks of national service could all be fitted into the summer holidays before starting university or 6th form.
