What you need is "imaging" software like Acronis (or Norton Ghost). I
thought everyone has learned to use those by now.

Acronis does not mention being able to burn an image to a set of bootable
DVDs. It's going on about hidden partitions and if these partitions are
on
the main drive, then if it fails then you loose your back up as well. It
also doesn't mention anything about reformatting the main partition which
is
the only way to eliminate viruses.

"Hidden partitions" is irrelevant for your problem. It's just an option in
Acronis where to store your "image backups". You can restore your "image"
from any backup medium (I prefer external hard disks which is safer and
faster). If you restore the main partition from an image backup the "main
partition" (C:/) is completely overwritten, even the MBR (where formerly
some especially nasty viruses could be located). You wouldn't even have to
reformat. Acronis got that advantage that you can make your "image backup"
*while* you are still working on your computer. Don't know whether Ghost
can do that already. I gave up on Ghost after some incompatibility problem
with NTFS and am hooked on Acronis ever since. It makes those backups very
fast too. Give it a try. I know lots of people who are hooked on that
program. ;-)

Will a version bought in the US be downloadable in the UK and will it slow
down my system on bootup since it's 137.1 MB?

Norton Ghost seems to be able to burn to DVD.
