The undersecretaries of Turkish and Greek foreign ministries will meet
today in Istanbul at the funeral ceremony of former Turkish Foreign Minister
Ismail Cem, an architect of rapprochement between Ankara and Athens.

There are hopes that the funeral could create momentum toward bilateral
ties between Turkey and Greece. Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary
Ertugrul Apakan will be present at the funeral. The Turkish government
extended an invitation to both Yerevan and the Armenian diaspora to
participate in the funeral ceremony following the death of Turkish-Armenian
journalist Hrant Dink.

But no concrete steps have been taken yet to normalize Turkish-Armenian
ties, despite the two countries' calls in this direction. The funeral of
Cem, whose death caused "deep sadness" in Greece, will now bring two
officials from the Turkish and Greek governments together. Greek Foreign
Minister Dora Bakoyannis called Cem a "visionary politician."

In 1999, Cem spearheaded an unprecedented rapprochement with neighbor and
regional rival Greece, capitalizing on an unexpected show of solidarity the
two nations displayed after deadly earthquakes hit the two countries a few
weeks apart.
