Actually, first, the Romaniote Jews of Ioannina and, second, the Mizrahi
Jews of Babylonia (Iraq) are probably the closest genetically to the original
Jews. A few years ago I saw a study (I'm pretty sure it was New_Republic ca
1999) that Jews are more closely related to Greeks, Italians and Turks (of
Turkey) than they are to Arabs. Jews of Christ's time who lived outside
Israel felt closer to Greeks than to Romans. Look at the common Jewish name
"Kalman" which derived from Kalonymos. But the name "Askenazi" derives from

Furthermore, in their diasporas, Greeks, Jews and Italians tend to chose to
live in the same neighborhoods.
