Joseph and his Brethren

I was given an English translation of Thomas Mann's novel, Joseph and his
Brothers, and have just started reading it. I'd like to know about books
that comment on details of this novel. He obviously draws on the Bible,
but he also seems to draw on other historical and maybe archaeological
sources. It would be nice to find a book that discusses in detail how
Mann has knit his various sources together. If you know of such a book,
please let me know. I can read various languages besides English, including
German, so I don't mind if it is not in English. If I owned Mann's novel
in German, I would read it in German, but since I already own it in English
the path of least resistance is to read the edition I have and maybe reread
it in German some day. One other thing I would be particularly interested
in knowing is how, in light of progress in history or archaeology, especially
of methods of dating ancient sites, events and artifacts, Mann might have
wanted or needed to write the novel differently.
