I know that height in Germany and Europe is based on the metric system
and is usually given in centimeters.
The metric system includes other units, too: meter, millimeter (0,001 m),
kilometer (1000 m)...
But, when people are asked about
their heights, do they usually give a specifc number, eg 188cm, 162cm?
Usually they'd say "1 (meter) 88", for example, and omit the word "meter":
"one eighty-eight".
Or do people typically round up or down to the nearest 5, eg 190cm,
160cm?
No - it would be a detailled number. The gaps are too big, compared to a
height indication in foot&inch.
Imagine a man of 1.84 m. Saying "1.80" or "1.90" would be far too small
oder too big, and instead of "1.85" he can as well give the correct number.
Ciao,
Paul
