Robert.

Er hat sich benommen wie der Elefant im Porzellanladen - c'est le cas de le dire :-) He was worse than George W., boasting like mad about a "victory" that existed only in his own imagination, as his party scored second only, because at least his opponent hadn't won either. He told everybody he was the chancellor, and he was going to stay, and anybody else had not the slightest chance to replace him.

And he started quarreling with the journalists, and tried to bully Mrs. Merkel. Westerwelle rightly asked "if anything had happened before" insinuating though not outspokenly that Schroeder were on alcohol or drugs. Fischer tried to ignore the spectacle turning his face to the other side, slightly disgusted. So much to the facts of too high a dosis of adrenaline and other fighter's hormones after an extremely stressing campaign. The problem is that Schroeder seemed to lose control of himself, which doesn't really recommend him as a head of government.

Mind: I voted for Schroeder and cannot stand Westerwelle, but though I understand what emotions were driving Schroeder, who had almost won against universal conviction that he was already done, this performance was a bit too much. After all, prime minister should be capable of controlling himself, at least in public.
