The French translation just gives the name (as far as my limited French
enables me to ascertain.) Most Heine translations I have seen are not
annotated, and I want to provide the modern reader with some insight
into just whom Heine was mocking.
I have tracked down about 30 such references, and they are always to
specific acquaintances or rivals of Heine, who would have been known to
his contemporaries but obscure to a present-day audience. Heine fought
his perennial battles in his poems. He goes after many of the same
targets in "Deutschland: ein Wintermärchen."
