Can you read a bit of German?
http://www.frankfurter-rundschau.de/
"Anzeigen", "Immobilien", "Suchen" - the new adds appear late on Fridays
CET.
or
http://www.is24.de
"Wohnung Mieten"
Most adds there are agents though who charge commission.
You can search within a radius of an address, or go down the tree, Hessen,
Darmstadt, and then city areas. It's a good site though with lots of
pictures
and should give you a good idea of the market.
Note that a 1 room flat in Germany has only one room for living/sleeping,
like a bedsit or bachelor flat in the UK. You could probably get something
like that from around EUR250/month to maybe EUR500. Since you say
one bedroom though perhaps what you're looking for is a 2 room flat,
in the german terminology.
There are lots of foreigners here (Frankfurt) and a lot of things going
on, many Germans are keen to meet foreigners and improve their
English etc. If you take a bit of trouble it shouldn't be hard to meet
people. I imagine the TU will be an interesting and stimulating
environment too. I've been in Frankfurt about 10 years now!
