Hi,
welcome to news:soc.culture.german .
This is an informational weekly posting to help you find your way
around this group.
This newsgroup is dedicated to discussing all aspects of German
culture past and present.
Both English and German are accepted languages here.
There is an excellent FAQ for this group which will answer many
of your questions. Please consult it before posting a question
here.
You can find it at:
http://www.watzmann.net/scg/
It helps if you try to comply to the netiquette when posting to
this group. There is a lot of traffic here and it will enable
others to be able to read questions and queries and help.
Problem
You might find that some people (mostly people not living in or
not having any first hand experience of Germany) pefer to use
soc.culture.german for
- spreading racist and religious hatred
- portraying Germany as a totalitarian state
- denial of the Holocaust
- discussing the 'alternative' history of WW (I &) II
- bringing up political issues not related to Germany (alone)
Consequences
Many readers of this group find those topics disturbing as they
are not related to the way they see or experience Germany today.
Many readers also chose to unsubscribe from this group because of
the large amount of material unrelated to it's main topic. This
is a pity.
On topic?
Most of these issues have groups in which they are on
topic. Like alt.revisionism, politics groups, history groups or
groups belonging to European and international issues.
Reply?
If you feel you want to reply to those messages (which are often
crossposted widely): Please chose an appropriate
Followup-To:-group or set a Followup-To: poster. This will keep
the group legible and enjoyable for all.
Avoid?
If you do not want those topics: Please do not react at all.
Posters who are ignored wil most probably leave.
Usually you cannot convince those posters. They have already
decided on their opinions. IF at all: You might want to discuss
with them by mail.
You might want to use a newsreader that allows you to filter for
both certain users and certain keywords and that allows you to
ignore certain threads altogether.
What else is there to do?
It might be most helpful if you participate actively in threads
you like. Or if you bring up questions you are interested in. You
will find that the regulars of this group are a friendly and
helpful bunch ;).
Thanks for being with us and thanks for honoring these hints.
