French Guyana

What is the status of French Guyana? Is it a department/region of
France, or a foreign protectorate of France like Puerto Rico is for the
USA? I was told by a guide in Paris that French Guyana is a state of
France just like Hawaii is for the USA. Is it true? I was also told
that the longest border France shares with any country is Brazil --
cosidering French Guyana as a state of France!
Please clarify.
