Comcast phone service charges 16 cents a minute...

Sixteen cents a minute is a lot of money.

Oh I forgot- to a janitor this is extravagant bwahahahar!!!

I look at this way: US$0.16 a minute is US$9.60 an hour. If you call for say
five (5) hours a month, then you are spending US$48 on overseas call. In
today's exchange rate, US$48 is about PhP2304 a month.

Now compare that to the cost of broadband in 'Pinas. My folks in QC pay
P1000 or so a month for a PLDT landline and DSL package. That's less than
half of the cost of your five hour call with your US provider.

The moral of the story is if broadband were available in the small Mindanao
town, I'd advise your folks to get the service and communicate via Skype or
Yahoo Messenger. Voice quality with Skype is far superior to that with Yahoo
Messenger.

Multi-conferencing is an ease, too. It's common for us to communicate like
this via Skype: a sister in QC, my brother in Tokyo Japan, a cousin in
Richmond BC Canada, another cousin in Bremerton Island WA USA, another
cousin in East Bay, Northern California USA and me in suburban Sydney
Australia. Try multiconferencing in Yahoo Messenger and you will see what I
mean.

Always on??? Ohh dear no... esp. if you think 16 cents is too much
bwahahahar!

If you're concerned about electricity bills, a laptop shouldn't consume that
much in electric power.

I you have a decent connection, Yahoo messenger is free with voice and
cam...I have found it entirely adequate...of course out in the province it
might be a little different...

Find out if broadband is available in that small town in Mindanao and you
might be saving in overseas calls.

VOIP.is.the.way.to.go.in.this.day.'n'.age.

We call less than 5 hours a month... $8 a month is the max we've
spent... and it's been far cheaper than "calling cards". As for VOIP
the success rate has left me unimpressed (vonage et al) I'll try
yahoo or skype sometime... if I can remember where we put the cam and
mic from the last move LOL
