Hindu influence happen to be required study in Philippine high schools
back before Martial law years. Including Chinese etc.. influences.

Hindu influence in Cebu is minimal compared to Manila and Islamic
islands. In fact Cebu is not popular among traders, it has little to
offer (most raders came from Indianized Malay city-States). Can't grow
rice very well, worked for corn when Spaniards arrived. Spaniards in fact
searched and found Panay is trading with Cebuanos they supplying rice, so
Spaniards went over there.



Cebu has the largest Hindu or Buddist temple in the Philippines!
And the Hindu gave them Kali which is the stick fighting art that Arnis
is derived from !
From what I've been told they were there in the 2nd century AD over 700
years before Islam!!!

I cannot dispute what people may have told you, but Kali is a new word
invented by a Filipino during the last century. Not like what "They
said".. I thought we went through all these before, it was a
Tagalog-Ilokano that invented that word, not even close to Cebu.

But... you never know.. Kali is not a good word in Hinduism, it means
destruction.


Actually Kali has several connotations depending on how it is used. Remember
Kali is the Goddess of destruction but also creation as well... her priests
were also doctors as well as warriors! It is also the root word for their
martial art which is the mother of all Asian martial arts... it is believed
that the Filipinos shortened it to just Kali and dropped the religion and
medical aspects.
Interestingly enough they are the only ones who "purified" the art- they
only practice the stick fighting forms that directly translate to unarmed
forms- those that use the exact same motions- so that there's no mental
delay in changing from armed and unarmed forms as with most other styles!




Cebuanos somehow didn't like the powerful Manila that when Legazpi wanted
"volunteers" they just went..
Cebu was also a constant victim for numerous raids more powerful
neighbors do.

Better location to drop anchor? Back then a heavy laden ship can be inside
Pasig River without dropping anchor, all the way to Laguna! Pampanga river
is a bit shallow but worked during those days, but not in modern times.

The biggest contribution Hindu gave to the Philippines is in the system
of social heirarchies, Rajahs, on down to Mahad-likha, sometimes thought
of as the Filipino version of noblemen, but I don't think so.

Some people think that Maharlika is taken from the word mahad-lingham.

Means "Big ***", but in non-literal meaning , it means "one who shines a
light" Lingham also mean light bringer, or who shines a light, something
like that.. literally it means "Big ***" or Penis..



A lot of words came from Hindus, like "tumbaga" for example. Likha,
mukha, guro..etc..

Not that much anymore, the typical thing is to replace a word from
whatever language is more prominent, tumbaga for example got replaced with
tanso (Chinese) and tumbaga replaced a native word.

This is the problem with Philippines, linguists had a lot to work with,
weeding through all that, luckily not only Chris is involved in helping
me. his friends helped me.

You have two things working against you here, the native character of
replacing a word with whatever is popular, then.. well, you know the next
part.
