PNP: 'We'll arrest Bedol once we have Comelec order'

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine National Police (PMP) is ready
to arrest controversial Maguindanao poll supervisor Lintang Bedol as
soon as an arrest order from the Commission on Elections (Comelec)
reaches his office, Director General Oscar Calderon said Tuesday.

"As soon as the copy [of the warrant] has been sent to us, we will
implement it," said Calderon told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview.

Calderon's assurance came amid reports the Comelec has ordered the
arrest of Bedol for refusing to cooperate with the poll body in its
investigation of the allegedly fraud-ridden elections in Maguindanao.

"I will order the arrest as a law enforcer if there is an order...but
I haven't seen the order," Calderon added, saying that any policeman
can implement the arrest as mandated.

Calderon however refused to comment on Bedol's admission that he owned
an arsenal of guns.

The PNP's Firearms and Explosive Division earlier said Bedol only has
two registered firearms. But in a report in the Philippine Daily
Inquirer, Bedol admitted owning a personal armory that includes, among
others, a Magnum .357, four pistols and some 20 baby Armalites.

Because of this, Bedol may be slapped with illegal possession of
firearms charges.

"I haven't heard of that [Bedol's firearms] yet but we are really
discouraging the ownership of many guns," Calderon
