There was a time when simple means the same as idiot, yes. Not anymore.
Simple in old English do mean stupid, so is commoner meaning all who are
common are stupid.. all those words were negative and meant idiot.
Not the other way around, it is the liberals that changed the meaning of
being common to denote, simple and not stupid or idiot.
So much for ancient political correctness.
For Tagalogs, the old way is to say literally "nasiraan ang bait" means
broken kindness, but figuratively means insane.
Gago or tanga means idiot, but not necessarily, like they say, tanga,
you can teach while gago, you cannot, or is that the other way around?
Anyway, using English, stupid you can teach, while idiots you cannot,
they are not capable of learning.
You're committing the common Pinoy error of trying to literally
translate Tagalog into English or English to Tagalog.
Don't scold him, he did it for *ME*. :-)
For me (because I'm NOT fluent with Tagalog) it's very useful to have such
translations (although they might not overlap in meaning 100%), because they
give me an IDEA of what an expression means.
When communicating in Tagalog, THINK in Tagalog and push English aside;
when communicating in English, THINK in English and shove Tagalog to the
side! THINK, in all cases, regardless of the number of languages and,
ah, dialects you're fluent in. Otherwise, you end up with gibberish.
That's correct, but only if you're fluent in both languages to begin with.

Actually, I make this error all the time, I can think and breath Tagalog and English but not when I am writing, that is always in English and that is why this error will crop up whenever I write.
Inside my head I have to translate from English to Tagalog.
