DepEd strengthens English as medium of instruction
Pasig City (22 August) -- Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli Lapus today issued a Department Order that seeks to increase the use of English as the medium of instruction in schools.
Entitled "Implementing Rules and Regulations on Executive Order No. 210," DepEd Order No. 36 (series of 2006) reiterates the rules and regulations set by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in May 2003 under Executive Order 210.
According to the DepEd Order, English shall be taught as a second language beginning Grade I and shall be used as the medium of instruction for the learning areas of English, Mathematics and Science starting Grade III, as provided for in the 2002 Basic Education Curriculum.
English shall also be used as the primary medium of instruction in all public and private schools in the secondary level, including laboratory and experimental schools as well as vocational and technical institutions.
As the primary medium of instruction, the time allotment for learning areas taught in English shall not be less than 70% of the total allotment for all learning areas in each year level.
The new policy aims to develop the aptitude, competence and proficiency of all students in the use of the English language to make them better prepared for job opportunities emerging from new technology- driven industries.
Filipino shall continue to be used as the medium of instruction in the learning areas of Filipino and Araling Panlipunan. (PIA)
