There are so many varieties of palm, coconut is one of them, so it is
just confusing what they are saying "palm" with the greater yield,
what kind is that?
Hi Tumbaga
I have only seen it referred to as 'palm oil', as distinct from say
'coconut palm' or 'date palm'
From 'The World History of Food' web site I found this:
"The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is a native of West Africa. It
flourishes in the humid tropics in groves of varying density, mainly in
the coastal belt between 10 degrees north latitude and 10 degrees south
latitude."
This is also a good source of information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_oil
Maybe it is not grown in the Philippines yet, in which case I shall have
to try and get permission to import some plants or seeds - that should
be an interesting experience to look forward to!.
It is being grown in Indonesia and Malaysia, I checked around, and it
also exist in some parts of the Philippines, mainly in Mindanao. When
coconut oil lost favor in the world market people turned to palm oil as
replacement.
However, the taste is different, formulations of cookies, chocolate milk
and non-dairy creamers changed so much that sales dropped a bit, so back
to coconut oil they went, at least for that part of the industry,
coconut oil is still the best. It can immitate the taste of butter well.
It seems that Indonesia produces a lot of it, endangering the natural
environment and wilderness' habitat, naturally since it is not native to
the area.
I think the coconut tree is well established in the Philippines, every part
of it can be used, and it does no harm. So why introduce something else? I
bet the Philippines would gain nothing, but maybe lose a lot.
