How the two religions compare:
Both Protestantism and Catholicism are branches of early Christianity.
If I am correct, Catholicism split from the original Christian religion
and Protestantism split from the Roman Catholic church after the
Protestant Reformation.
Both Catholics and Protestants are said to believe in angels. They both
believe in prayer, the Bible and their church. They both believe that
Jesus was crucified, that he was resurrected and will have a Second
Coming. They both believe Jesus was the son of the Virgin Mary. They
both believe in the Trinity (the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit/Ghost). They both believe in the Eucharist, baptism, the need
for Salvation, Heaven and Hell; though their views on these topics
differ. Both religions believe that abortion is murder.
How the two religions contrast:
Both religions believe in prayer, the Bible and their church, but
Protestants interpret the teachings of the Bible as THEY interpret
them, or with the help of God. If the Bible should conflict with the
teaching of the Church, Protestants believe that the Bible should
overrule church traditions. Catholics believe the teachings of the
bible should be interpreted by a leader, thus the hierarchy in the
Catholic Church (i.e. popes, bishops, etc.). They believe that church
tradition and the scriptures in the Bible coincide, and accept the
authority of the Pope in ways that other religions find to conflict
with the Bible. Protestants pray to God, and God only. Catholics pray
to God as well, but may ask saints to pray on their behalf (or may even
pray to that saint). Catholics also believe in Mary in a way (some pray
to Mary) that other religions may consider to be idolatry.
While both religions believe that Jesus was the son of the Virgin Mary,
the belief of Immaculate Conception is only shared among Catholics.
Catholics believe Mary was born free of sin. Protestants, however, do
not believe that Mary was sinless.
Catholics believe in transubstantiation during the Eucharist. In other
words, when the bread and wine are consumed during Mass, they believe
that the bread and wine will transform into the Body and Blood of
Christ. Catholics believe Jesus is present in the Eucharist.
Protestants believe that the blood and wine represent the Body and
Blood of Christ, but only symbolically. Both believe the Eucharist is
important for salvation.
Catholics usually perform baptisms during infancy. Protestants may
sometimes wait until adulthood before being baptized and believe a
baptism should only be performed after the person has sought
repentance.
Catholics believe that you are granted Salvation and passage into
Heaven by the grace of God, by having faith, and through performing
good deeds. Protestants believe that you are only granted Salvation and
passage into Heaven by the grace of God and by having faith, that the
deeds you do play little relevance. Catholics believe Salvation can be
gained through repentance and confession, and this may be performed as
needed, throughout a Catholics' life. Protestants believe that once
saved, they will always have Salvation. Most Catholics believe in
Purgatory, Limbo and Particular Judgement (final judgement), whereas
Protestants don't. Purgatory for Catholics is a place where people go
after death, where they can be atoned of their punishments and sins.
Protestants believe only Christ can purify you. Protestants believe
that, with the idea of Purgatory by Catholics, Catholics will forego
repenting during life because they can be atoned for their sins in
Purgatory. Protestants believe repentance can only happen during life.
Catholics believe Salvation is granted to everyone. Protestants believe
Salvation is granted only to those who have faith, that are willing to
receive it. Catholics believe that Hell is a physical place, as well as
a state of mind. Protestants believe Hell is only a physical place of
endless torture.
Many Catholics have erected statues in their homes or churches, of Mary
or certain saints. Protestants consider this idolatry.
Catholics call their ministers "father", whereas Protestants don't.
Protestants believe this violates Matthew 23:9 which states, "And call
no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is
in heaven."
The Catholic Bible also have another section of the Bible with more
books, I cant rember the names of the books or the name of the section.
Owell.
