Precisely, because that would create a world of hurt. It would be a
system where the more you hurt yourself the more you are entitled to
get. Where beggars deliberately cripple themselves, or kids
deliberately exposing infants to the elements for the sake of your
pity. It encourages self-destruction. Charity, in the strict sense
that it is giving without anything to be given in return, is evil
precisely because of this.

But "helping the poor" need not be charity. Give to those not on the
basis of their need, but on the basis of their ability to make
something grow out of your investment. Give it to those who work hard.
Give it to those who are productive. The fact that they are also poor
doesn't mean that they don't deserve it. What is wrong is to believe
that they deserve it, for the simple reason that they need it.
