Prof. Benito Lim of the Ateneo made a good observation with regards to
the high dollar remittances from our OFWs.
Actually GMA should not be glad with regards to this statistics datum.
It only means that she is not able to generate the local employment
that she said she would in her SONA speech.
Filipinos would rather stay here than work abroad if they have the
choice. If they cannot find a decent means of living here then they go
to work in other countries.

If they prefer to work in Iraq illegally than to work here then there
must be something very wrong with our economic policy.

I think the observation misses the point. What the high remittances
indicate is that Filipinos earned a lot of money and sent it back to
the RP during the holiday season. This money would in turn be used to
purchase things in the RP. That is the significance of the report.

And furthermore, it never makes sense to force the President to create
jobs in the RP only for her to look good. People should be encouraged
to make money where there is money to be made. That's the bottom line.
Then, when there are people who can buy things here, then there would
be merchants who would decide to do business here.

Presidents are only responsible for generating jobs in two sectors: civil service and military. All other sectors should not be the President's direct responsibility. A good economy will take care of private employment. And remember, a small civil service and cadre military are signs of prosperity.
