So far, RP is no. 1 followed by Vietnam. Thailand though is known to
have a very tough team.

RP still on top as SEA Games rivals flex muscles

What was a storm of gold medals the other day turned into steady
trickles although the Philippines kept its lead over closest pursuer
Vietnam yesterday with the 23rd Southeast Asian Games overall
championship still too early to call.

Two more golds from athletics and fencing along with one each from
cycling, karatedo, wushu, bowling and swimming, boosted the Filipinos'
medal production to 34 golds, 17 silvers and 20 bronzes as of 7 pm.
following a second-day harvest of 20 golds alone last Monday.

The total is just 16 short of the Vietnam total, but as far as overall
title, it's still a long way to go.

"This is a nice trend for us but it is still too early to say what
will happen. If this were a basketball game, we're just in the second
quarter and a lot of things can still happen. But our athletes are
doing well. If we continue to average 15 to 20 medals a day, we have a

good chance of equaling, or even surpassing, our 91-gold medal
production in 1991," Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman
William "Butch" Ramirez said.

Vietnam came in second with 17 golds, 17 silvers and 20 bronzes
followed by Thailand (13-19-26), Malaysia (13-13-12), Indonesia
(9-12-16), Myanmar (4-7-5), Singapore (3-5-13), Brunei (0-2-2) and Laos
(0-0-3).

Arnel Ferreria took the hammerthrow gold via record fashion, the second
record rewritten by the host team in athletics after Henry Dagmil's
landmark feat in the long jump category.

His victory was followed later in the afternoon with Jimar Aing taking
over Ernie Candelario as the king of the 400 meters for the centerpiece
sport's seventh gold.

Fencing delivered two golds with Veena Nuestro nailing her first in the
biennial games in the foil and Walbert Mendoza ruling the saber event
anew by beating Olympic bronze medalist Winradech Kothny anew.

Aida Yang and Vicky Ting beat the Myanmar and Singapore teams in the
female duilian event to add to the earlier golds by Willy Wang
(Taolo-Jianshu), Arvin Ting (Taolo-Daoshu), Pedro Quina Taolo Nanquan.

Police captain Nelson Pacalso bested Nguyen Bao Toan in the individual
kumite's 65 kg division for the sport's third gold after those of
Gretchen Malalad and Marna Pabillore in Mandaue City.

The first of what could be many golds from the Trace Aquatic Center in
Los Baños came with Miguel Molina nailing the 400-m individual medley.

Marites Bitbit grabbed the first gold for cycling in the mountainbike
cross-country event in Danao City, where 2003 winner Eusebio Quinones
and Frederick Feliciano could only settle for bronzes.

Pacalso and Bitbit's performances were witnessed by no less than
President Arroyo, who along with First Gentleman Mike Arroyo was also
at the Rizal Memorial Track Stadium to witness the gold medal
performance by steeplechase bet Rene Herrera.

Forty-one-year old pilot Juanito Angeles registered a first gold in
shooting with a 1-2 finish with fellow Filipino Ariel Santos at the
PNSA shooting range in Muntinlupa City.

Angeles' more illustrious teammate, Richard Gomez, could only place a
poor fourth in the practical shotgun pump category

Maria Cecilia Yap bested Malaysian Zandras Aziela and Indonesian Novie
Phang for the top place at the podium in bowling competitions held at
the Pearl Bowling Center in Parañaque City.
