What do you expect from a country that values celebrities and pompous politicians more than scientists, doctors, engineers, etc. Heck, monkey see monkey do...FPJ, ex-prez Estrada aren't exactly Mensa members nor are they even in the ballpark...yet the country idolizes them, including the glut of actors/actresses-turned-mayors-congressmen. Its pathetic that our countrymen can easily be deluded by false words, false promises, false perceptions...i guess being in movies is like being in real life...these 'heroes' will save the day at the end...yeah right. Our schools who should be educating these people area failing them, and you have the end results of generations of people so far removed from what is real and expedient...imagined greatness and forever associating success with greed are sure fire ways down the wayward path...
The country is mired in mediocrity, forever wallowing in poverty, unable to compete with even its neighbors in areas of finance, economics, leadership, and yes even sports...Everytime we talk about Olympic sports, we always talk about the good old days, meaning half a century ago...can't Filipinos ever aspire to become athletically superior or we forever relegated to has-beens or Third World weaklings...even in the areas of education, our so-called bastions of educational excellence are not even ranked, much less recognized...we are way behind the curve of social, political, educational, and economic progress...our armies can't even suppress or destroy mere bandits or rebels who are probably better armed themselves...
But what do I care...i'm sure i'm not the first one who knows or has expressed these gripes and observations :)

The Philippine Star 11/20/2005
There is an endless stream of bad news from the education sector. The latest emerged during Senate deliberations on the proposed 2006 budget of the Department of Education. DepEd officials reported that the number of school dropouts is increasing. Only 68 out of every 100 first grade students reach the sixth grade, according to DepEd officials, and only 66 graduate from elementary school. Of the 66, 58 go on to high school, and only 43 finish secondary education. Of the 43, 23 go on to college, with only 14 getting a university degree.
A survey conducted by the National Statistics Office painted an equally depressing picture. The NSO survey showed that one in every three Filipinos aged 6 to 24 never received formal education or has dropped out of school.
The country, which used to boast of one of the highest literacy rates in Asia, can use a wake-up call. The NSO survey also showed that one in 10 Filipinos aged 10 to 64 cannot read or write while two out of every 19 Filipinos are functionally illiterate.
The findings are consistent with the results of assessment exams for elementary and high school students, which many flunk despite passing scores so low they are almost a joke. The findings are also consistent with the appalling consequence of the introduction of a new curriculum and grading system in public high schools, which rightly puts more weight on science and mathematics: about a third of students flunked the previous school year. <snip> ---end
