The point was probably "do your best and god will do the rest" or "nasa
diyos ang awa, nasa tao ang gawa." Perhaps the messages was also,
"nothing is possible without God." Remember that Frodo was told by
Gandalf not to kill Gollum as he might have a role to play later on.
Probably JRRT was trying to point out that though sometimes doing the
right thing might sound stupid, you never really know. But I can't say
that I totally agree.
