Israel tried to kill Bin Laden in 1996 - Report
1/26/2006 6:00:00 PM GMT
Israel's Mossad spy service was close to killing AL-QAEDA leader OSAMA BIN
LADEN in 1996, an Israeli newspaper reported on Thursday.
According to Yedioth Aharonoth, Mossad agents picked up BIN LADEN's trail
while assisting their Egyptian and American counterparts in investigating a
failed assassination attempt on EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT HOSNI MUBARAK in
Ethiopia.
The probe revealed that the a group of rebels, who also operated in Sudan,
were involved in the assassination attempt.
The rebel group included a wealthy Saudi contractor under the name OSAMA BIN
LADEN.
Israeli agents then identified a woman who was close to BIN LADEN, whom they
recruited with the help of the intelligence agency in her country. The
newspaper didn't reveal the woman's name or nationality.
According to Yedioth, the woman was recruited to kill BIN LADEN, but her
mission failed due to a political dispute between Israel and her country
linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Danny Yatom, who was head of Mossad at the time, refused to comment on the
report.
