270 Muslim Brotherhood supporters arrested

270 of Brotherhood supporters were arrested by Egyptian authorities Saturday
in some of the districts participating in a runoff for the second round of
parliamentary elections, to decide 122 seats in nine provinces where no
candidate got more than half the vote in the Nov. 20 round.

A police official confirmed the arrests of only 140.

Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood were attacked Saturday while trying to
give their vote to the group.

Hundreds of supporters of the Egyptian Islamist group, banned since 1954 but
generally tolerated by Egypt's authoritarian regime, have been detained over
the past two days.

According to The Associated Press, the group's supporters made a
surprisingly strong performance in early rounds of voting.

41 of some 240 candidates standing Saturday are members of the Brotherhood,
according to AP.

Although thousands of police are deployed outside polling centers in Egypt,
voters complained of several attacks as the runoff got under way.

Analysts say that the Brotherhood's unprecedented success in the polls,
having won 47 seats of the 186 seats decided so far, more than tripling its
total in the outgoing parliament, increased tensions with the ruling party
headed by President Hosni Mubarak, which has long dominated the 454-seat
bod, and expected to maintain that control, having won 122 seats so far.

Also Egyptian judges monitoring the polling process complained of voter
intimidation and interference by security forces in the previous rounds.

Officials said that polls' initial results will be released later today,
while the final results are due within three days.
