ElBaradei wins Nobel peace prize
10/7/2005 9:30:00 AM GMT
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its head, Mohammad
El-Baradei, won the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts against the
spread of nuclear weapons, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced today in
Oslo, according to BBC.
The committee chose the IAEA and El-Baradei, an Egyptian, from a record
field of 199 candidates.
Leaks ahead of the 2003 and 2004 prize announcements led the Nobel Committee
to tighten secrecy this year.
The prize, named after Swedish philanthropist Alfred Nobel, consists of a
gold medal, a diploma and cheque worth 10m Swedish crowns ($1.29m). It will
presented in December in the Norwegian capital.
The annual international peace prize has been awarded since 1901. In keeping
with tradition, it is awarded in Oslo while the other Nobel prizes, for
excellence in excellence in physics, chemistry, medicine and literature, are
awarded in Stockholm.
Several observers have speculated that the peace prize would be awarded to
individuals or groups working to limit the proliferation of atomic weapons
following a year of international focus on the issue, largely due to the
fragile talks with Iran and North Korea and failed attempts to revive the
nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
