New Cuban leader flags economic reform
Posted 3 hours 40 minutes ago
New Cuban leader Raul Castro is forcing the pace of change in the
country with a new series of economic reforms.
His plans will make it easier for state workers to own their homes and
will allow them to pass them on to their children.
Cuba's new President is to speed up the granting of private titles to
the minority of people who live in state-owned homes, which will mainly
affect those who could lose their state housing when they retire.
This includes military families, sugar and construction workers as well
as doctors and teachers.
According to government figures, about 85 per cent of Cubans already
have legal title to their homes but no one is allowed to buy or sell
property and there are no signs yet that this is about to change.
