Dan you and I had a dialogue a few years ago about the impact of the
embargo on Cuba, you might remember that at the time stated that New
orleans was only between 200 to 300 miles from Habana.
Anyway at the time I asked you why Cuban's were not allowed to buy
computers and other electronic devices and you stated that was not the
case. That Cuban's could simply not buy them due to the pricing
pressues of the embargo.
Yet today, a memo has been circulated stating ""Based on the improved
availability of electricity the government at the highest level has
approved the sale of some equipment which was prohibited," the Cuban
Government freely sdmits that they did indeed prohibit the purchase of
computers.
How will this make computers and internet connections affordable and
thus available to the average Cuban? If they have extra money to
spend, I doubt that computers are going to be a priority for them.
That you suggest otherwise, shows just how out of touch you are with
Cuban reality.
And there is still the matter of the US embargo that restricts full
access to the international internet for Cubans. It will be some time
before the proposed fiber-optic link to link to Venezuela is built to
get around this US roadblock. As it is, access must be strictly
rationed based on the priorities of the entire community -- education,
health care and commerce.
