Russia Warns against Pressuring Iran

Moscow, Feb 17 (Prensa Latina) Russian Armed Forces Staff Chief Gen.
Yuri Baluevski urged the international community to do its best to
avoid an armed conflict against Iran, in view of US pressure on the
nuclear issue.

Baluevski stressed that events around problems with Tehran indicate
that a possible use of force has not been ruled out. However, he
emphasized that Iran´s real possibilities do not match US potential.

In case force is used, Iran will respond. However, the clash will not
be symmetrical, he said, according to RIA Novosti news agency reports
on Thursday.

The military official reiterated that a military solution is not the
most adequate, and can be avoided if reasonable stands prevail on
both sides.

In his opinion, a Moscow meeting with Iranian authorities on Feb 20
points to a peaceful solution of the dispute with the US and the
European troika, Britain, France and Germany.

Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Gulyanrez Ansari told the State Duma
(Lower Chamber of Russian Parliament) Thursday that his country
highly values Russia´s views regarding the nuclear issue in the
International Atomic Energy Agency.

Deputy chair of the State Duma International Affairs Committee,
Konstantin Kosachev, reaffirmed that the Kremlin opposes any measure
of force and pleaded for continuing negotiations and political
consultations as the only alternatives.

Moscow is also against an imposition of sanctions on Iran and defends
the discussion of the nuclear issue within IAEA as a viable solution,
different from US pressure on the European troika to bring the
Iranian issue to the UN Security Council.

Russia proposed Tehran create a joint venture to produce nuclear fuel
in Russia for Iranian atomic plants.
