Three rafters await trial alter being caught trying to leave Cuba

CAIBARIÉN, Cuba, September 27 (Alexander Francisco García Mujica, Villa
Banca Press / www.cubanet.org) - Three rafters are being held at the
Pendiente prison in Santa Clara awaiting trial alter being caught in August
trying to illegally leave Cuba.

Samuel Noa Pérez, Ariel Espinosa Siveiro and Nelson Ledesma Martínez were
intercepted by border guards in a motor launch when they tried to leave from
the northern coast in a home-made boat. The three men were tossed into the
sea when the motor launch rammed their boat as they attempted to flee.

The men were accused of disobeying the law and trying to illegally leave the
country.

Under an agreement between the United States and Cuba, those rafters picked
up at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard and returned to Cuba cannot be punished.
The same does not apply to those caught by Cuban authorities.
