That is the whole idea. The US cannot just muck around Chinese waters
as if the USN owns it. Sailing a whole CVBG (aircraft carrier
battlegroup) through the Taiwan Straits and flying spy planes over
Chinese territorial waters are provocations. In times of hostilities
the very real message to the US is that these US provocations won't
survive the confrontation. The long term objective is for US bases to
exit the Asian mainland.
Peaceful Rise China has a base on the American mainland (Panama
Canal), so US is entitled to bases on the Asian mainland.

Persian Gulf, coinciding with a similar trip by France's President
Nicolas Sarkozy, culminating in a deal with the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) for a small French base, Iran's security calculus has changed.
It has almost reached the point of Tehran considering the option of
reciprocating the perceived excess Western intrusion into its vicinity
by allowing a military base for China at one of Iran's Persian Gulf
ports or on one of its islands.
