Explosions are not effrective in the vacuum of space. The energy of
the explosion dissipates almost immediately into nothingness. A near
miss with a proximity fuse explosion is useless. To destroy an
orbiting satellite you have to hit it physically. If one has to do
that there is no point having and explosive warhead. When a solid
object hits a satellite it will shred it. It won't blow it up. The
debris field from a shredding event is limited to its immediate
vicinity. The media attack on China for scattering thousands of
pieces of metal into orbit is an over exaggeration. But no one really
knows what the debris field is. China cannot jump into the arguments
as it will be ridiculous to get into a fight that the debris field is
only limited and the bashers say that it pollutes the universe. Take
note tat the US and the USSR had conducted the same satellite
interceptions more than 20 years ago. There is no evidence that their
debris field had caused any problems.
