The Bush administration, facing heavy pressure to deal with soaring
trade deficits, said Friday it is imposing economic sanctions against
China to protect American paper producers from unfair Chinese
government subsidies.
The action reverses 23 years of U.S. trade policy by treating China,
which is classified as a nonmarket economy, in the same way that other
U.S. trading partners are treated in disputes involving government
subsidies.
...
Another arm-twisting tactic to get it your way when things are not
going your way?
Its even weirder that China would subsidize a non strategic industry
like paper least of all subsidy to a specific glossy paper. This is a
test case that is more than just paper.
Of the tens of thousands of containers filled with stuff from China
that land in the US daily most go back to China empty. Only three
products are exported to China - scrap metals, paper and junked
electronics goods. I would believe that China doesn't want the scrap
electronic stuff any more as there isn't much of value worth
salvaging. I vaguely remember (in an Oakland newspaper report 3 years
ago) that China isn't that interested in any ting else as the shippers
in China prefer a faster turnaround of (empty) containers
.
