USSR had to show the world that she was all powerful. China might be
spending larger amounts on the military but certainly not flexing
muscles anywhere. Let's hope the leaders don't have such egos that
would ruin the country. If the US has a few more Bush years it can be
the next USSR.

Africa. China isn't throwing money at Africa.

China IS spending billions in Africa. Read the daily newspapers.

Spending billions in return for needed natural resources is a bit
different than spending billions so some African country will kiss
your ass at the UN.

They put their money into better use than us.

USSR had to prop up
Eastern Europe. Nato & EU were sucked into doing that now. EU is not
welcoming Eastern European with open arms. East Germany almost
brought down the German economy after reunification.

China is also helping North Korea, Pakistan,...

Tiny sums compared to what it cost the USSR.

It's the good will they get back in return that counts.
