ighteen pandas were officially registered in a "kindergarten" at
Sichuan's Wolong Giant Panda Reserve and Research Center earlier this
month.
Last year there were 12 pregnancies and 19 births at the Wolong Giant
Panda Reserve, of which 17 of the babies survived. This was a record-
setting year for the center. The Center also rescued a wild baby panda
from Baoxing County of Sichuan last year, bringing the total number of
young pandas to 18.
The 18 baby pandas, aged from five to seven months, were taken to the
playground set up in the "kindergarten," which is equipped with a
slide, canopy, wooden horse, activity platforms, and other toys. The
pandas seem very active and playful.
The staff of the "kindergarten" will teach the pandas to live both
independently and with other pandas. They will be taught skills such
as eating bamboo leaves and climbing trees until they are 18 months
old. Before the group is split up, the pandas will also experience
being in the outside world, including experiencing different
temperatures, humidity, and collective living.
Each of the baby pandas have also been given a name: Si xue, Bao le,
Mei xi, Mei xin, Tao tao, Si jia, Huan huan, Fu ni, Fu wa, Feng yi,
Lang lang, Cui cui, Yi bao, Qian qian, Duo duo, Meng meng, Mei an, and
Xi dou. Their names were chosen from a collection of nearly 100,000
possible names.
