Alleged massacre in Hunan

http://www.radionetherlands.nl/news/international/

The Japanese news agency Kyodo reports that at least 100 people were
killed last week when Chinese police opened fire on a demonstration in
the province of Hunan. A force of around 1,000 police officers had
reportedly been deployed to end a rally against the local authorities

Quick searches turned up nothing about this, not even in China blogs:

http://www.baidu.com/s?wd=%BA%FE%C4%CF+%D4%C0%D1%F4&cl=3

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%E6%B9%96%E5%8D%97+%E5%B2%B3%E9%98%B3&btnG=Google+Search

The same bloggers that reported Taishi were quiet, so it is clear this
reporting is questionable. After some more digging, it turns out the
alleged police massacare, curruption, land seisure accusation is FALSE.

Here's the real news:

http://www.baidu.com/s?wd=%BA%FE%C4%CF+%CF%E6%D2%F5&cl=3

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%E6%B9%96%E5%8D%97+%E6%B9%98%E9%98%B4&btnG=Google+Search

1000 riot police were sent to ShanYang not YueYang. And it's not
because of land seisure, but village gangsters taking revenge on
eachother, rioting and destrying businesses in town. Here's the latest
update I can find, from reliable pro-democracy website Boxun.com:

http://www.peacehall.com/news/gb/china/2006/08/200608052308.shtml

Boxun initially reported the same thing as US government propaganda
outlet RFA and anti-China propaganda outlet Epoch Times, but changed
their story after their contact Mr. Zho updated the facts on the
ground.

AFAIK, neither RFA nor Epoch Times have updated/retracted their
inaccurate initial reporting.

There is no doubt that there has been turmoil and rioting in Yueyang.
There is some dispute as to the number of people killed. Here is the
latest report (from today) on the situation:

http://www.peacehall.com/news/gb/china/2006/08/200608081211.shtml

It is clear that the above article is totally different from the
article quoted in your first post of
this thread which stated that:

"... at least 100 people were killed last week when Chinese police
opened fire on a demonstration in the province of Hunan. A force
of around 1,000 police officers had reportedly been deployed to
end a rally against the local authorities in the town of Yueyang. "

In this case, there were no violent demonstration. There were no
Chinese police
opened fire on the demonstration. The disturbance was caused by bar
altracation
which then attracted a lot of people. Two or three people were hurt and
no one was
dead. Neither was the incident censored.

The article says the Hunan provincial government denies 100 people were
killed. The article says that there have been hundreds of riots in the
surrounding area since July 25. It says a local CCP official was
injured and that people died including at least two children. Your
misleading characterization only regards some initial confrontation,
and not the whole story (which can be read in Chinese at the website I
gave).

You posted the link to the Chinese article as supportive evidence to
bolster the original
claim of

"... at least 100 people were killed last week when Chinese police
opened fire on a demonstration in the province of Hunan. A force
of around 1,000 police officers had reportedly been deployed to
end a rally against the local authorities in the town of Yueyang. "

The Chinese article simply does not support any of the above although
it had explained
what had happened as I had pointed out.

Do not confuse the July 25 incident with the August 2 incident.

Look like you are the one who had been confused about the dates.
The Chinese article which link

http://www.peacehall.com/news/gb/china/2006/08/200608081211.shtml

you had provided does not support any of the claims you posted.
The only incident covered by the article in some details is the July
25th bar altracation.

For those interested, the following translations from Chinese to
English on the issue have been accumulated. It has both sides:

BTW, please provide the correct link for the quote of the beginning
quote.

http://www.radionetherlands.nl/news/international/

does not lead to the article.

That website gives daily news, so it has been updated.

in the town of Yueyang. Violent demonstrations are increasingly common
in the Chinese countryside; most of them are held to protest at
government expropriations for industrial projects. Much of the social
unrest is believed to go unreported due to strict government
censorship.
